Quarterly Results Reveal an 87% Increase in Video Downloads and 27% Increase in Video Streams Viewed From Previous Quarter
Toronto, ON — 10 Dec 08
QuickPlay Media, the premier provider of mobile TV and video solutions, today unveiled the findings of its first quarterly consumer consumption analysis. The results—aggregate usage statistics from 15 representative QuickPlay-powered services over the third quarter of 2008—demonstrate that demand for mobile TV and video content is increasing steadily.
The results, compiled from July 1 through September 30, 2008, show mounting consumer usage of both mobile video on demand (VoD) and linear TV. Further, the increase in streaming video and video downloads per unique user shows consumers are becoming more engaged with this medium. Key findings include:
“Our quarterly results demonstrate that mobile TV and video adoption and usage continue to grow. Results were particularly strong for our customers that offer integrated clients, where all types of mobile media are available from one interface. This makes discovery and navigation considerably faster and easier for the end consumer. Convenient trial options and attractive pricing packages also contributed to strong uptake,” said Wayne Purboo, president and CEO, QuickPlay Media. “Looking ahead to 2009, we expect that interest in mobile TV and video will continue to develop, with a trend towards longer-form, premium content.”
“The QuickPlay Media results are consistent with our research, which also shows a mounting interest in mobile TV and video. In fact, we estimate that the U.S. mobile TV/video market will increase from about 12 million subscribers and customers at the end of 2007 to nearly 28 million subscribers and customers by 2012,” said Lewis Ward, research manager, wireless communications research at IDC. “Companies such as QuickPlay contribute substantially to this growth, and their innovative mobile TV and video solutions allow integration of virtually all types of video services."
*Streaming media include live content as well as clips the consumer can view in near real-time. Unlike streaming content, multimedia downloads can be saved to a mobile device and then viewed at any time, regardless of the device’s connectivity status. Increases are from base Q2 consumptions in the multiple millions.
